Chhattisgarh CM Vishnu Deo Sai Inaugurates ‘Make in Silicon’ Symposium at IIIT Naya Raipur to Boost India’s Semiconductor Mission

10th Foundation Day event highlights innovation, research, and self-reliance in semiconductor manufacturing, positioning Naya Raipur as a hub for technology and skill development.

Raipur: Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai inaugurated the two-day ‘Make in Silicon’ symposium at Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Naya Raipur on the occasion of the institute’s 10th Foundation Day. Addressing the event, CM Sai emphasized that the initiative is a crucial step toward advancing India’s semiconductor manufacturing and technological self-reliance.

“This year, Chhattisgarh is celebrating its Silver Jubilee, and today also marks the 150th anniversary of the national song ‘Vande Mataram,’” said the Chief Minister, extending greetings to the people of the state and the IIIT family. He highlighted that the institute, named after the eminent educationist Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, embodies the vision of linking education, unity, and industrial development with national progress.

Boosting India’s Semiconductor Mission

CM Sai noted that India is making rapid strides toward technological self-reliance under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “The Semiconductor Mission, electronics, and chip manufacturing initiatives have achieved historic milestones. These programs are not only developing infrastructure but also empowering youth and promoting innovation,” he said.

Highlighting the ubiquitous role of semiconductors, the Chief Minister said, “From mobile phones to satellites, defense systems to artificial intelligence, semiconductors are at the core of modern life. Initiatives like ‘Make in Silicon’ will provide a new direction to India’s chip revolution.” He also stressed that Chhattisgarh is ready to play an active role in the mission, with its new industrial policy providing special provisions for the semiconductor sector.

CM Sai informed that Naya Raipur is being developed as an IT and innovation hub, with the groundwork for a semiconductor unit already laid. “This will create direct and indirect employment opportunities for our youth,” he said, adding that the state’s ‘Chhattisgarh Anjor Vision Document’ emphasizes sustainable development with semiconductors as a key sector.

Focus on Innovation, Research, and Industrial Growth

Finance Minister O.P. Chaudhary recalled the early days when Chhattisgarh lacked national-level institutions and praised the visionary leadership of former CM Dr. Raman Singh for establishing IITs, IIMs, HNLU, AIIMS, NIT, and IIITs. He said, “Today, education and technological growth offer immense potential for the state. Innovation, skill, and capability will define the future of our youth.” He encouraged students to invest in technical proficiency, research, and creative thinking.

Higher Education Minister Tank Ram Verma emphasized that the symposium is a significant initiative toward making India self-reliant in semiconductors and industrial sectors. “Academic institutions play a key role in promoting research and innovation in the semiconductor sector, in line with PM Modi’s vision,” he said.

IIIT Naya Raipur: A Hub for Research and Skill Development

Director of IIIT Naya Raipur, Prof. Om Prakash Vyas, shared the institute’s achievements over the past 10 years, highlighting its focus on education, research, and innovation aligned with India’s vision of self-reliance. Advanced technical training and industry-based projects are being implemented to enhance students’ skills and capacity.

The symposium, organized by IIIT Naya Raipur’s Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) department’s Microelectronics and VLSI Design group, aims to strengthen India’s semiconductor ecosystem and foster self-reliant manufacturing capabilities. Experts and participants from across the country discussed advanced technologies in VLSI design and microelectronics, including nanoelectronics, MEMS, quantum devices, and industry-academia collaboration.

National Impact and Future Prospects

The event serves as a platform to promote innovation, knowledge exchange, and collaboration among academia, industry, and research institutions. It seeks to accelerate India’s self-reliance in semiconductor devices, packaging, and flexible electronics. Policymakers, researchers, and startups highlighted the importance of skill development, supply chain strengthening, and sustainable manufacturing.

The ‘Make in Silicon’ symposium marks a significant step in establishing India as a global center for semiconductor innovation and manufacturing, reflecting the spirit of the Atmanirbhar Bharat mission.
