New Delhi: Western Coalfields Limited (WCL), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited under the Ministry of Coal, has achieved 100% of its cleanliness and efficiency targets under Special Campaign 5.0 (October 2–31, 2025). The company’s achievement reflects its strong focus on sustainability, innovation, and inclusivity, making it a model PSU for responsible environmental stewardship.
Cleanliness Drive Covers 5.69 Lakh Sq. Ft. and Generates ₹1.43 Crore
During the campaign, 257 sites were cleaned, covering an area of 5.69 lakh sq. ft. A total of 223 metric tonnes of scrap was scientifically disposed of, generating ₹1.43 crore in revenue through recycling and reuse initiatives. This demonstrates WCL’s commitment to turning waste into valuable resources and supporting the circular economy.

E-Waste to Art and Circular Economy Initiatives
WCL introduced several innovative practices to make the campaign more impactful.
- E-Waste Collection Kiosks were created using repurposed iron and steel furniture, encouraging responsible recycling.
- An “E-Waste to Art” workshop was organized for employees’ children to raise awareness about sustainability and creativity.
These activities reflect the organization’s proactive approach to environmental education and waste management.
Focus on Hygiene, Health, and Inclusivity
WCL also emphasized sanitation and worker welfare during the campaign.
- Bio-toilets were installed across multiple operational Areas, improving hygiene and sanitation standards.
- Safai Mitra Shivir was organized to provide health check-ups and distribute safety kits to over 1,250 contractual workers and housekeeping staff.
- A Women-Driven HR Cell was established at Ekona Mine, Majri Area, fully managed by women employees, reinforcing the values of inclusivity, empowerment, and leadership.
Model PSU for Sustainable and Responsible Growth
WCL’s Special Campaign 5.0 initiatives have effectively blended cleanliness, creativity, and community welfare, setting a benchmark for other PSUs.
