Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday emphasized that the state is on track to become a major industrial destination in India due to its robust infrastructure and peaceful environment. Speaking to a gathering of industrialists, she highlighted the improvements in industrial scenario, infrastructure development, and social harmony in Bengal.
Banerjee inaugurated the upgraded electric crematorium at Shiriti in South Kolkata and laid the foundation of another electric crematorium at Doi Ghat virtually. She emphasized that ensuring peace in the state and prosperity for all communities is a key priority of her government.
“People from different communities have lived in Bengal peacefully for generations. We will protect peace and ensure Bengal prospers,” said the Chief Minister.
Industrial Growth and Employment Opportunities
The CM underscored the improvement in Bengal’s industrial environment:
- Zero industrial strikes since 2011: Since Mamata Banerjee took office, no industrial strikes have been recorded. Previously, 72 lakh mandays were lost due to strikes.
- Rapid industrial expansion: The Kolkata-Durgapur corridor has seen growth in cement, steel, wagon and coach manufacturing units, and IT industries.
- Future industrial plans: The development of industrial corridors and parks will attract more industries, positioning Bengal as a gateway to the Northeast.
“We are against strikes, and the industrial scenario has improved significantly,” the CM added.
Infrastructure Development Driving Connectivity
Banerjee also spoke about notable infrastructure achievements across the state:
- Roads and bridges: New roads and bridges have improved connectivity across Bengal. Once the Gangasagar bridge is completed, travel to the holy site will be seamless.
- Tourism and religious site development:
- Skywalks constructed at Kalighat and Dakshineswar
- Proposed Mahakal temple in North Bengal to house the world’s tallest Lord Shiva idol
- Durga Prangan in New Town and Jagannath Dham in Digha attracting tourists nationally and internationally
- Revitalization of local economy in Digha and surrounding areas
- Skywalks constructed at Kalighat and Dakshineswar
Social Welfare and Community Facilities
The CM highlighted development initiatives for cremation and burial facilities across Bengal:
- 700 cremation sites developed for proper funeral services
- Samabyathi scheme: Provides ₹2,000 financial aid for cremation to poor families
- Burial grounds upgraded to ensure dignified facilities for all communities
“Earlier, many villages lacked proper cremation spaces, and bodies were left half-burnt. Now the state has upgraded facilities for all communities,” she said.

Mamata Banerjee thanked industrialists for their support in strengthening Bengal’s economy and assured them of government assistance:
