New Delhi: The Indian Army is undergoing a significant leadership transition at the top level, with major changes taking effect across some of its most critical operational commands. The reshuffle follows the retirement of two senior Army Commanders on Tuesday and the elevation of several top-ranking officers to strategic positions beginning Wednesday.

The changes involve the Western Command, Eastern Command and Southern Command—three formations that play crucial roles in India’s defence preparedness across sensitive borders and strategic theatres.

Lt Gen Manoj Kumar Katiyar Retires After Four Decades of Service

Lt Gen Manoj Kumar Katiyar, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Western Command, retired after completing a distinguished military career spanning nearly 40 years.

Western Command remains one of the Army’s most important operational formations, overseeing border security along sectors facing Pakistan, including Jammu, Samba, Kathua and Punjab.

During his career, Lt Gen Katiyar held several crucial appointments. Before heading Western Command, he served as Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) at Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Army). He had also commanded the Army’s I Corps, one of the country’s premier strike formations.

Lt Gen Pushpendra Pal Singh to Lead Western Command

Lt Gen Pushpendra Pal Singh, currently serving as Vice Chief of the Army Staff, is scheduled to take over as the new head of Western Command.

His appointment assumes significance because Western Command remains central to India’s frontline military readiness, particularly given continuing security sensitivities along the western border.

The command has recently seen intensified modernization efforts, particularly in the areas of drones, surveillance systems and counter-drone technologies.

Operation Sindoor and Western Theatre Preparedness

During his tenure, Lt Gen Katiyar oversaw Western Command during heightened tensions with Pakistan last year. Referring to military preparedness, he had recently stated that during Operation Sindoor, Indian forces successfully thwarted hostile objectives.

He also highlighted that the Army was undertaking large-scale procurement of new-generation military equipment, including drones and anti-drone systems, while also developing certain technologies through in-house military workshops.

These modernization efforts are expected to continue under the new leadership.

Lt Gen RC Tiwari Retires as Eastern Army Commander

Lt Gen R. C. Tiwari, who headed Eastern Command, also retired on Tuesday after an extensive military career marked by operational and strategic assignments.

Eastern Command remains vital for military preparedness across India’s eastern theatre, particularly in mountainous and high-altitude sectors.

Lt Gen VMB Krishnan Elevated as New Eastern Commander

Lt Gen V. M. B. Krishnan has been promoted and appointed to succeed Lt Gen Tiwari as Eastern Army Commander.

The appointment comes at a time when Eastern Command continues to focus on force readiness, infrastructure development and theatre capability enhancement.

Lt Gen RC Tiwari’s Operational Legacy

During his tenure, Lt Gen Tiwari played a significant role in strengthening operational preparedness in the eastern theatre.

Across more than three decades of service, he held several important command roles in both conventional and counter-insurgency operations.

His career included:

• Commanding an infantry battalion in counter-insurgency operations

• Leading a mountain brigade in high-altitude sectors

• Commanding the elite Black Cat Division

• Serving as General Officer Commanding of 3 Corps (Spear Corps) in Nagaland

His operational exposure across varied terrains made him one of the Army’s experienced field commanders.

Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth Moves to Army Headquarters as Vice Chief

Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth, currently General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Southern Command, will move to Army Headquarters as Vice Chief from April 1.

An officer from the Armoured Corps, Lt Gen Seth was commissioned in December 1986 and has held several major command and staff appointments during his career.

Before taking charge of Southern Command in July 2024, he commanded the Mathura-based XXI Strike Corps, one of the Army’s key strike formations.

Lt Gen Sandeep Jain to Head Southern Command

Lt Gen Sandeep Jain, presently Chief of Staff at Southern Command, will be elevated as the new Southern Army Commander.

This completes a wider top-tier reshuffle involving three major Army commands and the Army Headquarters.

Strategic Significance of the Reshuffle

The latest leadership changes come at a time when the Indian Army is continuing modernization efforts while maintaining operational readiness across multiple theatres.

The appointments ensure continuity in command at a period when border security, technological upgrades and theatre preparedness remain top military priorities.
