New Delhi: In a significant development for India’s judiciary, Chief Justice of India B R Gavai today administered the oath of office to three newly appointed judges of the Supreme Court. The swearing-in ceremony took place on May 30, restoring the apex court to its full sanctioned strength of 34 judges, including the Chief Justice.
The newly appointed judges are–
- Justice NV Anjaria, Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court
- Justice Vijay Bishnoi, Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court
- Justice AS Chandurkar, Judge of the Bombay High Court
Filling Vacancies in the Top Court
These appointments were made against the three existing vacancies in the Supreme Court, created following the retirements of former CJI Sanjiv Khanna, Justice Abhay S Oka, and Justice Hrishikesh Roy.
While the Court is currently at full strength, a new vacancy will arise on June 9 with the superannuation of Justice Bela M Trivedi.
Who Are the New Supreme Court Judges?
Justice NV Anjaria
Born on March 23, 1965, in Ahmedabad, Justice Anjaria hails from a family with a strong legal background. His father was also part of the judiciary.
- Graduated from HL College of Commerce, Ahmedabad
- Earned LL.B. from Sir LA Shah Law College (1988)
- Completed LLM from University School of Law, Ahmedabad (1989)
- Started law practice in Gujarat High Court in 1988
- Elevated as Additional Judge of Gujarat High Court in 2011 and became permanent judge in 2013
- Took oath as Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court on February 25, 2024
Justice Vijay Bishnoi
Born on March 26, 1964, in Jodhpur, Justice Bishnoi began his legal career in 1989, practicing before the Rajasthan High Court and Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT).
- Appointed Additional Judge of Rajasthan High Court in 2013
- Became permanent judge in 2015
- Took oath as Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court on February 5, 2024
Justice AS Chandurkar
Born on April 7, 1965, Justice Chandurkar studied in Pune, completing his legal education at ILS Law College.
- Began legal practice in Mumbai in 1988
- Moved to Nagpur in 1992, where he practiced across various courts
- Elevated as Additional Judge of Bombay High Court on June 21, 2013
The appointment of these three seasoned jurists reaffirms the judiciary’s commitment to maintaining continuity and strengthening the Supreme Court’s capacity to handle a wide spectrum of constitutional and legal matters. With this move, the Court is poised to continue delivering justice efficiently – although a new appointment will soon be required to fill the upcoming vacancy.
