Mumbai: In a landmark administrative decision, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has got its first woman Municipal Commissioner, with Ashwini Bhide, an IAS officer of 1995 batch, appointed to head Mumbai’s civic administration.
Currently serving as Additional Chief Secretary in the Chief Minister’s Office, Bhide will succeed Bhushan Gagrani, whose tenure ends on March 31, 2026.
Her appointment is being viewed as one of the most significant bureaucratic decisions in Maharashtra’s urban administration, especially given the scale of civic challenges handled by India’s richest municipal body.

Aseem Gupta
Currently serving as Additional Chief Secretary to Deputy CM Eknath Shinde and also handling Urban Development and Housing.

Ms Bhide is best known nationally for leading complex metro execution in Mumbai.
She served as Managing Director of Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited in two separate terms.

- Colaba
- Bandra
- SEEPZ
The project involved difficult tunnelling, rehabilitation issues and land-related controversies.

Between 2020 and 2024, Bhide served as Additional Municipal Commissioner in BMC.
