The Yogi Adityanath government of Uttar Pradesh has appointed former IPS officer Dr Satya Narayan Sabat as the new chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Subordinate Services Selection Commission (UPSSSC). Dr. Sabat (1990 batch IPS officer), who retired as Director General (DG) of the Criminal Bureau of Criminal Investigation (CBCID) on December 31, 2024, will serve in this new role for a tenure of five years, until May 14, 2029.
In a parallel move, Subhash S Baghel (a promotee IPS officer of 2002 batch), has been appointed as a member of the commission, further strengthening the expertise within the body responsible for recruiting Group ‘C’ and Group ‘D’ posts in the state.
Dr. Sabat, whose career spanned over three decades, was selected for the Indian Police Services in 1990. He held prominent roles in various districts including Varanasi, Agra, and Lucknow, and served in key departments like the UP Power Corporation, Prison Administration, and CB-CID. Notably, he was promoted to Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in 2005, became Additional Director General (ADG), and eventually the Director General of Police (DGP) in 2021.
His diverse experience across the police force and his leadership in various administrative roles have earned him numerous prestigious awards including the United Nations Peace Medal, the President’s Police Medal, and the UP DGP’s Excellence Award.
Dr. Sabat originally hails from Koraput, Odisha, and is known for his educational credentials. He holds a degree in Physics (SSC), a Ph.D., a diploma in PGDBM, and a proficiency in French. These qualifications, alongside his distinguished career, have made him one of the most respected police officers in the state.
His appointment follows the resignation of Praveer Kumar in July 2024, leaving the post of UPSSSC Chairman vacant. Dr. Sabat’s expertise is expected to play a key role in streamlining the recruitment process and maintaining the integrity of the commission.
With his extensive background in law enforcement and public service, Dr. Sabat’s leadership is anticipated to bring significant reforms to the UPSSSC, contributing to its critical role in Uttar Pradesh’s recruitment system.
