In a significant administrative reshuffle, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has announced the appointment of Rajesh Kumar (RK) Singh as the new Defense Secretary.
Mr Singh, a distinguished 1989-batch IAS officer from the Kerala cadre, will succeed Aramane Giridhar, an IAS officer of 1988 batch, whose tenure will conclude on October 31.
Currently serving as the Secretary at the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Mr Singh has been pivotal in advancing industrial policies and promoting internal trade. His new role will begin with an initial appointment as the Officer on Special Duty in the Ministry of Defence before officially assuming the position of Defense Secretary.
The ACC has also approved an extension of Singh’s service beyond the usual retirement age. He will serve as Defense Secretary until October 31, 2026, or until further notice, whichever comes first.
Mr Singh’s career is marked by his tenure in various high-profile roles, including Commissioner of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, and Chief Vigilance Officer at the Food Corporation of India. His extensive experience in key governmental positions is expected to bring valuable insight and leadership to the Ministry of Defence.
