Mr. Anurag Dhankar, a 1994-batch IPS officer of the Tripura cadre, has been appointed as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Tripura. His appointment, effective from May 18, 2025, follows the impending retirement of Mr. Amitabh Ranjan, a 1988-batch IPS officer, who is set to retire later this month.
Mr. Dhankar brings with him over 16 years of policing experience in Tripura, having previously served in various key roles, including as Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) from 2013 to 2016. His career has also included significant central deputation postings. He notably led the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the high-profile Nirav Modi diamond fraud case, holding senior positions such as Superintendent of Police, Deputy Inspector General, Joint Director, and Additional Director within the CBI.
In addition, Mr. Dhankar has served as Inspector General (Personnel) in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and contributed to the Bureau of Police Research and Development. Earlier in his career, he was part of the United Nations Mission in Kosovo during 2003–04.
His appointment as Tripura’s DGP was made by Governor N. Indrasena Reddy in consultation with the Union Public Service Commission. With a broad spectrum of experience across state policing, central investigative agencies, and international assignments, Mr. Dhankar is expected to bring a well-rounded and dynamic leadership to the Tripura Police.
