Guwahati: In a key development in Assam’s police leadership, senior IPS officer Harmeet Singh (RR: 1992) has been officially appointed as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Assam. The appointment was notified by the Home (A) Department of the Government of Assam on May 19 and comes into effect from the date he assumes office.
Mr Singh, who had been serving as Special DGP and holding additional charge as acting DGP since January 27, 2025, succeeds GP Singh in this top post. His elevation to the Apex Scale (Level 17 of the Pay Matrix) underlines the significance of the leadership transition in the state’s policing hierarchy.
In addition to his current role, Singh will continue overseeing key portfolios as Director General of Civil Defence, Commandant General of Home Guards, and Director of Fire & Emergency Services in Assam.
A Veteran Officer with Academic and Field Expertise
An alumnus of St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University, with a BA (Hons) in History, Harmeet Singh also holds a Master’s degree in History from Punjab University, Chandigarh. Known for blending academic insight with field acumen, Singh has built a career around critical domains such as counter-terrorism, cyber security, conflict resolution, child protection, de-radicalization, and emergency response.
He has earned widespread recognition for promoting technology-driven, citizen-centric policing models and has played a pivotal role in enhancing smart governance and community engagement in Assam.
