Situated on the banks of the Ganga and known for its silk, Bhagalpur district of Bihar also has a glorious history in bureaucracy. In the past 160 years, 121 SP of (district police chiefs) served in this district, besides well-known social reformer and Founder of Brahmo Samaj Raja Ram Mohan Roy, who served here as a civil servant.
Retired IPS and former DGP of Jharkhand Mr. MV Rao was also part of this city’s governance and he shared the image of the succession board at the city police office on his Twitter handle. Mr. Rao, who worked for over 33 years in Bihar and Jharkhand besides going on central deputation as a CRPF officer, was the 101st officer on the prized board.
In his conversation with his followers, who absolutely enjoyed his post, as most were from the town, Rao also mentioned what was the post referred to before Independence. Replying to a comment he said, “Precursors of IPS was IP ( Indian Police) , IP ( Imperial Police ) and before that mostly British Military officers headed Police units in India under British colonial rule.”
