Gujarat is gearing up for a magnificent celebration of classical music as the annual Tana-Riri Music Festival begins this Saturday in Vadnagar, Mehsana district. Chief Minister Mr. Bhupendra Patel will inaugurate the festival, which remains one of the state’s most cherished cultural events rooted in centuries-old musical heritage.
A Tribute to Gujarat’s Legendary Sisters Tana and Riri
The two-day festival honors the extraordinary legacy of Tana and Riri, the legendary sisters whose mastery over Malhar raag is historically celebrated for calming the fiery effects of Tansen’s Deepak raag. Their devotion, artistry, and sacrifice continue to inspire generations, and the festival has been held at their samadhi site in Vadnagar since its inception in 2003.
The event was instituted by the then Chief Minister and now Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi to preserve and promote Gujarat’s classical music traditions.
Celebrated Artists to Enrich the Festival with Classical and Folk Performances
This year, renowned classical vocalist Ms. Kalapini Komkali will be felicitated with the prestigious Tana-Riri Music Honour Award, introduced in 2010 to recognize outstanding contributions to Indian classical music.
The first evening will feature classical renditions by Ms. Kalapini Komkali, instrumental brilliance by Niladri Kumar, and folk performances by Ishani Dave.
On the second day, Minister of State for Forest, Environment, and Transport Mr. Pravin Mall will attend as the chief guest, with the stage coming alive through performances by classical vocalist Dr. Subhadra Desai, instrumentalist Ninad Adhikari and team, and folk artist Parth Oza and troupe.
Gujarat Expands Its Cultural Calendar with ‘Spatak Classical’
Adding further vibrancy to the state’s cultural landscape, Gujarat is also set to host the ‘Spatak Classical’, a new festival celebrating both Hindustani and Carnatic traditions.
Featuring acclaimed vocalists, instrumentalists, and emerging artists, the event aims to offer an immersive musical experience while strengthening Gujarat’s position as a thriving hub for classical arts.
Together with the Tana-Riri Mahotsav, these festivals are expected to elevate the state’s reputation as a premier destination for cultural and classical music enthusiasts.
