Amravati: The Andhra Pradesh government has officially appointed senior IAS officer G. Sai Prasad (IAS:1991:AP) as the next Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh, as reported by Indian Masterminds. The appointment order was issued on Saturday, November 29, 2025.

He will formally assume the top bureaucratic position on March 1, 2026, following the completion of the extended tenure of the current Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand (IAS:1992:AP) on February 28, 2026.

Three-Month Extension Granted to K. Vijayanand

Before finalizing the transition, the N. Chandrababu Naidu-led Andhra Pradesh Government granted a three-month extension to the serving Chief Secretary, K. Vijayanand.

His original tenure was scheduled to end on November 30, 2025, but he will now continue in office until February 28, 2026.

This extension was approved under Rule 16(1) of the All India Services (Death-Cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958, with the approval of the competent authority. Vijayanand will retire upon attaining the age of superannuation on February 28, 2026.

Smooth Transition Planned at the Top Administrative Level

With Vijayanand’s extension and the early announcement of his successor, the government aims to ensure a smooth and stable transition at the topmost level of state administration.

Officials stated that the early clarity in appointment is meant to avoid administrative gaps and maintain continuity in governance.

Sai Prasad Emerges as the Strongest Contender

Even before the announcement, G. Sai Prasad had widely emerged as the most prominent contender for the Chief Secretary post.

He was considered earlier as well when Vijayanand was appointed, and remained the leading candidate due to:

  • Service tenure extending until June 2026, providing long-term stability
  • His earlier role as Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu (2014–2019)
  • Internal promises reportedly made regarding his elevation after Vijayanand
  • Strong support from senior TDP leaders, citing his seniority, integrity, and representation
  • Positive backing from party-affiliated social media groups and political voices

Many senior leaders within the government had described him as a dynamic, non-controversial, and highly competent administrator.

Current Role Before Appointment

Before being named Chief Secretary, G. Sai Prasad was serving as –

  • Special Chief Secretary, Water Resources Department
  • Ex-Officio Special Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister

His handling of water management, infrastructure, and high-level coordination with the Chief Minister’s Office further strengthened his case for elevation.

About G. Sai Prasad: A Distinguished Administrative Career

Born on May 6, 1966, in Andhra Pradesh, G. Sai Prasad is a senior officer of the 1991 IAS batch, Andhra Pradesh cadre.

He entered the Indian Administrative Service at the age of 25, after clearing the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 1990.

He holds an M.Tech. degree, and his strong academic foundation in engineering has enabled him to manage complex portfolios in –

  • Power sector
  • Water resources
  • Infrastructure
  • Land administration
  • Public governance

As of 2025, at the age of 59, he continues to serve in senior administrative roles with an official scheduled retirement date of December 31, 2026.

UPSC Journey

Sai Prasad successfully cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 1990, securing a place in the prestigious IAS. His early performance and technical expertise helped him rise quickly in various administrative domains.
