Nidhi Nivedita, a distinguished IAS officer, hails from Sindri in Jharkhand. Born into a middle-class family, her story is one of persistence and the belief that education is a powerful tool for change. Despite the societal norms that often limit a girl’s potential, Nidhi rose above these challenges to become a respected figure in the civil services.

OVERCOMING SOCIETAL EXPECTATIONS

From a young age, Nidhi demonstrated a strong inclination towards academics. However, her path to success was not without obstacles. Growing up in an environment where her family didn’t provide much support for her educational pursuits, Nidhi was often faced with skepticism because of her gender. Many believed that as a girl, her future would involve marriage and household responsibilities, not professional achievements. There were times when she felt the weight of these perceptions, but she remained determined to prove them wrong.

THE ROLE OF HER MOTHER

In a touching recollection, Nidhi spoke about how her mother was her pillar of support through all the challenges. During a program, she shared how people tried to undermine her mother’s confidence, saying that Nidhi would never amount to much because she was a girl. They doubted that she could achieve something as significant as becoming a collector. But Nidhi’s mother stood firm and always encouraged her, reminding her of her potential. Her mother not only believed in her abilities but also played an instrumental role in keeping her motivated, even when the going got tough.

CHALLENGES AND ENCOURAGEMENT AT HOME

Nidhi’s mother had to endure criticism as well. Some even questioned her decision to support Nidhi’s education, asserting that it was futile for a girl to study too much. But despite the challenges, Nidhi’s mother made sure that her daughter’s dreams were not stifled. Nidhi fondly remembers how her mother often encouraged her to study, even when her own strength seemed to waver. There were moments when Nidhi faced intense pressure, and at times, she was even reprimanded for studying too long. However, her mother’s encouragement always kept her going, and Nidhi never compromised on her passion for learning.

CIVIL SERVICES JOURNEY

After completing her studies, Nidhi decided to pursue a career in the civil services. In 2012, she cleared the UPSC examination, marking a significant milestone in her journey. She attributes her success largely to the support and guidance she received from her mother, acknowledging that her mother played both the roles of a mentor and a guiding force during every difficult phase. For Nidhi, this achievement was not just personal but also a tribute to her mother’s belief in her capabilities.

KEY POSTINGS AND CONTRIBUTIONS

Nidhi’s career as an IAS officer has been marked by a series of key postings that reflect her competency and commitment to serving the public. Her first posting was in Jhabua as Assistant Collector. Over the years, she has taken on significant roles, including Project Director of the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) and Additional Collector in Indore. She also served as the District Panchayat CEO in Singrauli, where she gained considerable attention for her tough stance on corruption. During her tenure, she ordered physical exercises for a Panchayat Secretary involved in the mismanagement of funds meant for toilet construction, which garnered both praise and criticism.

COMPASSIONATE LEADERSHIP

One of the most touching moments of Nidhi’s career came when she voluntarily donated blood to save the life of a young girl in Rajgarh. When the blood bank in the district lacked the necessary blood type, Nidhi did not hesitate to step forward. Her gesture was deeply appreciated by the community and highlighted the compassionate side of the officer, who is often seen as strict due to her professional responsibilities.

Nidhi Nivedita’s journey reflects a blend of professionalism, commitment, and empathy. While she is known for her firm approach to governance and administration, her soft heart is what sets her apart from many others in her field. Despite her professional achievements, she continues to value the importance of personal connections and empathy in her work. Her story serves as an example of how determination and the right support can help break barriers and create meaningful change, even when society sets limiting expectations.
