New Delhi: BEML Limited has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC) to collaborate on metro rail projects in India and expand their presence in international markets. The agreement marks a significant step in strengthening India’s capabilities in integrated urban mobility solutions.

Focus on Domestic and Global Metro Rail Opportunities

The MoU establishes a framework for cooperation between BEML and DMRC to jointly identify, pursue, and execute metro rail projects. The partnership will leverage:

  • BEML’s expertise in manufacturing rolling stock and equipment
  • DMRC’s experience in metro project execution and operations

The collaboration aims to deliver end-to-end metro solutions, positioning both organizations competitively in domestic as well as global markets.

Boost to Export-Oriented Growth Strategy

This development comes as BEML expands its global footprint. The company recently secured its first overseas metro rolling stock order worth around USD 60 million for a project in Africa.

Building on this success, the MoU represents a shift from a supply-driven model to a comprehensive EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) approach, enabling integrated project delivery under a single umbrella.

Leadership Insights on the Partnership

The MoU was signed at the DMRC office in New Delhi by:

  • Rajeev Kumar Gupta, Director (Rail & Metro), BEML
  • P.K. Garg, Director (Business Development), DMRC

The signing ceremony was attended by Shantanu Roy, Chairman & Managing Director of BEML, and Dr. Vikas Kumar, Managing Director of DMRC, along with senior officials from both organizations.

Shantanu Roy highlighted that the collaboration would strengthen BEML’s presence in the rail and metro sector by combining manufacturing strength with execution expertise.

Dr. Vikas Kumar described the agreement as a “historic collaboration between two Indian giants”, emphasizing its potential to enhance urban mobility systems in India and globally.

Push for Indigenous Innovation and Technology

A key focus of the partnership is the development of indigenous technologies in metro rail systems, including:

  • Indigenous propulsion systems for rolling stock
  • Locally designed and manufactured Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs)

These efforts align with the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, aiming to reduce dependence on imports and strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities.

The collaboration will also support upcoming infrastructure projects such as high-speed rail, metro networks, and Regional Rapid Transit Systems (RRTS).

Strengthening India’s Urban Mobility Ecosystem

The partnership is expected to:

  • Improve urban transportation infrastructure
  • Enhance project execution efficiency
  • Boost exports of Indian metro solutions
  • Create opportunities for technology innovation and skill development

By combining expertise in manufacturing and operations, BEML and DMRC aim to deliver globally competitive and sustainable metro solutions.
