IAS Krithika Jyotsna: From Mathematics Classrooms to the Corridors of Power

From cracking UPSC in her fourth attempt to serving Uttar Pradesh as an IAS officer, Krithika Jyotsna’s journey blends perseverance, family influence, and impactful governance.
Indian Masterminds Stories

In the world of competitive exams, where every mark determines destiny, IAS Krithika Jyotsna’s story shines brightly. A 2014-batch officer who secured All India Rank 30 in the 2013 UPSC Civil Services Examination, Krithika’s journey is as intriguing as it is inspiring. Hailing from Hyderabad, with roots intertwined in Uttar Pradesh, she has carved a unique path from the world of numbers to the realm of governance.

FOURTH TIME’S THE CHARM

Krithika’s relationship with UPSC was anything but smooth. Starting her preparation in 2010, she faced three failed attempts. The fourth attempt, however, was her breakthrough. Securing AIR 30 and emerging as the joint topper for Andhra Pradesh-Telangana, she was suddenly in the limelight.

Reflecting on her preparation strategy, she once told the media, “What changed in my fourth attempt was perspective. I stopped chasing perfection and focused on consistency.” This change not only brought her success but also shaped her approach to challenges in her administrative career.

A FAMILY OF ACHIEVERS

Krithika didn’t have to look far for inspiration. Her father, SBL Mishra, served as the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests in Telangana, and her mother, Nirupama Mishra, works with the UP government. Her elder brother, Kartikeya Mishra, is a 2009-batch IAS officer, and her sister, Kanika, works in Dubai. Surrounded by achievers, Krithika’s aspiration to serve the nation felt natural.

Her family’s connection to Uttar Pradesh played a significant role in her personal and professional journey. Despite growing up in Hyderabad, she spent formative years in Prayagraj, deepening her bond with the state that would later become her administrative home.

THE MATHEMATICS PRODIGY

Krithika’s academic prowess was evident early on. After completing her schooling in Hyderabad and Prayagraj, she graduated in Mathematics from the prestigious Miranda House, Delhi University, and later pursued a master’s degree in the subject.

Her affinity for numbers often gives her an edge in her administrative work. From analyzing data for policy-making to breaking down complex systems, her mathematical mindset has proven invaluable. “Math taught me problem-solving at its core, and that’s a skill I lean on every day,” she shared in an earlier interview.

A PERSONAL CONNECTION TO UTTAR PRADESH

While Krithika began her IAS journey with the Andhra Pradesh cadre, her life took a turn when she married Rahul Pandey, a fellow 2014-batch IAS officer from the UP cadre. This marriage brought her closer to Uttar Pradesh, and she successfully requested a cadre transfer.

Her roots in UP, combined with her administrative acumen, have enabled her to connect with the people she serves, bringing her education and experience full circle.

AN ONGOING JOURNEY

Krithika’s story is one of grit, determination, and adaptability. From her academic brilliance to her administrative achievements, she exemplifies the balance between personal aspirations and public service. For those who aspire to make a difference, her journey offers a powerful lesson: success is not linear, and every detour holds the potential for greatness.

Her legacy continues to unfold, one policy, one initiative, and one success story at a time.
