On the occasion of World Mental Health Day, we are privileged to have a conversation with IRS officer Shubhrata Prakash, a 2002 batch officer who has bravely shared her personal journey through clinical depression. Mental health issues, particularly depression, continue to be surrounded by stigma in our society, making it difficult for individuals to seek help. Ms. Prakash’s story is one of courage and resilience, and through her openness, she hopes to break the silence surrounding mental health.

On this special day, Indian Masterminds interviewed Commissioner of Income Tax, IRS officer Shubhrata Prakash, who candidly talked about mental health, depression, myths, and stigma in detail.

In this conversation, we have explored her journey through depression, which she has openly discussed in her book, The D Word. Ms. Prakash will shed light on the early signs of her struggle, how she managed her duties as a civil servant during that time, and how she ultimately sought professional help to regain her strength. 

She also addressed the common myths surrounding depression, such as the misconception that it’s a temporary phase or something that can be overcome with sheer willpower. Ms. Prakash’s story highlights how essential it is to break the stigma and encourage open conversations about mental health, especially in high-stress environments like government services, corporate jobs, and other demanding careers.

In addition to discussing her own experiences, Ms. Prakas has also shared insights on the role workplaces play in supporting mental health, how young professionals can manage stress, and the importance of seeking help early. Her advocacy for mental health awareness is a reminder that it’s okay to reach out for support.
