On the stage of MANIT Bhopal in 1983, a young engineering student held a trophy for winning a group singing competition. No one in the audience that day could have imagined that the same young man would one day lead the Madhya Pradesh Police. Today, that singer-turned-engineer, Kailash Makwana, is not just the Director General of Police (DGP) of Madhya Pradesh — he is one of the most influential figures in the state’s security landscape, known for integrity, courage and a deep sense of public duty.
AN EXTENSION THAT REFLECTS TRUST AND STABILITY
In late 2025, the state government decided to extend Makwana’s service for another year, allowing him to continue as DGP until December 2026. The decision aligns with the Supreme Court’s guidelines on minimum tenure for police chiefs. But beyond the legal framework, the extension is seen as a vote of confidence in Makwana’s leadership. His track record in modern policing, crime prevention strategies and crisis management convinced the government that continuity would be beneficial for the force and the people of the state.
THE EARLY YEARS — ROOTS IN EDUCATION AND HARD WORK
Born on 11 December 1965 in the Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh, Kailash Makwana grew up far from the limelight. Academics shaped him early. After completing his schooling, he earned a Bachelor of Engineering degree from MANIT Bhopal. His academic journey did not stop there — he went on to pursue a Master of Technology from IIT Delhi. Soon after completing his MTech, he cracked the UPSC exam and joined the IPS on 30 August 1988.
Even during his student days, Makwana displayed a balance of discipline and creativity. The group singing award he won on Independence Day 1983 — a photo he recently shared again on social media — hints at a softer side behind the uniform.
HARD POSTINGS THAT BUILT A STRONG OFFICER
After training, Makwana served in several challenging districts across the then undivided Madhya Pradesh. From 1989 to 1993, he worked as Additional Superintendent of Police in Durg, Morena and Jabalpur. Between 1994 and 1999, he took charge as Superintendent of Police in Dantewada and Bastar — regions known for complex law and order situations. Later, he was SP in Mandsaur and Betul.
These assignments shaped his policing instincts early: calm decision-making, tactical thinking and a refusal to be intimidated by difficult terrain — whether physical or political.
RISING THROUGH THE RANKS — EXPERIENCE ACROSS EVERY MAJOR WING
Makwana’s career reflects rare versatility, spanning almost every major wing of the Madhya Pradesh Police. He has held key leadership posts including DIG Intelligence and DIG AJK, before moving into higher responsibilities as ADG Intelligence and ADG Administration. He later served as Special DG CID and DG Narcotics, gaining expertise in crime investigation and anti-narcotics enforcement. His integrity was highlighted during his tenure as Director General of Lokayukta, where he accelerated corruption investigations, and he also contributed to police infrastructure development as Chairman of the Madhya Pradesh Police Housing Corporation.
In every department, he became known for pushing efficiency and accountability. During his time with the Police Housing Corporation from 2022 onward, he worked on improving police infrastructure and ensuring better living conditions for personnel — a priority for morale and organisational discipline.
THE LOKAYUKTA CHAPTER — INTENSITY AND CONSEQUENCES
Makwana’s six-month appointment as DG Lokayukta remains one of the most talked-about phases of his career. Under his leadership, the Lokayukta accelerated investigations into corruption cases that had been pending for years. He filed cases against high-ranking officers, including an IAS and an IFS, and ordered a technical inquiry into alleged irregularities in the Mahakal Lok Corridor project.
The move triggered political discomfort, and Makwana was shifted from the Lokayukta to the Police Housing Corporation within six months. His confidential performance appraisal (ACR) was downgraded soon after. Makwana did not remain silent — he appealed the ACR reduction, submitting that investigating powerful officers had resulted in retaliation. After a review, the current government corrected his ACR and awarded him a perfect score — 10 out of 10.
This episode reinforced his public image: sharp, fearless and unwilling to compromise with corruption.
AN IMAGE BUILT ON INTEGRITY — EVEN WHEN IT CAME AT A COST
In just three and a half years, Makwana faced seven transfers. Whether under the Kamal Nath government or the Shivraj Singh Chouhan administration, his posting history reflected both reliance and resistance. Officers who worked with him often describe him as “firm, fair and unshakable once he believes he is doing the right thing.”
A VISION-DRIVEN DGP — MODERNISING POLICING FOR THE FUTURE
As the current DGP of Madhya Pradesh, Makwana has supervised major law and order operations and pushed for reforms designed to outlast his tenure. His priorities include:
- Stronger crime prevention planning
- Use of technology in policing and intelligence
- Better coordination with forensic systems
- Reinforcement of public safety and community policing
The extension of his tenure is expected to give him enough time to carry forward long-term strategies without disruptions.
THE MAN BEYOND THE UNIFORM — A POLICE CHIEF WHO SINGS
Amid postings, investigations and transfers, Makwana never abandoned a personal hobby — music. He still sings occasionally, and some of his performances are available on YouTube. Colleagues say singing helps him relax and maintain emotional balance despite the intensity of the job. For someone whose professional life is filled with pressure, this artistic side gives his story a uniquely human tone.
A CAREER THAT INSPIRES
Kailash Makwana’s journey is not the story of shortcuts or privileges. It is the story of a small-town boy who studied hard, worked harder, cracked one of the toughest exams in the country, and then stood firm — even when honesty came at a personal price.
With his service now extended until December 2026, the state police force stands at a turning point. Stability in leadership means stability in vision — and Makwana’s vision is clear: a modern, efficient and corruption-free police system that the people of Madhya Pradesh can trust.
His journey shows that strength and sensitivity can coexist — a police officer can be both a crime-fighter and a singer. And sometimes, the most powerful voice is not the one belting out a melody, but the one that refuses to bend under pressure.
