In a unique initiative, 2012 batch IPS officer Karanraj Singh Vaghela, Superintendent of Police (SP) of Valsad, Gujarat, has taken a significant step towards empowering tribal youth in the district. Recognizing the challenges faced by tribal students in accessing quality coaching for competitive exams, Mr. Vaghela launched a special coaching program specifically designed for them.

In an exclusive conversation with Indian Masterminds, the officer shared details about the same.

FROM LIMITED GRANT TO OVERFLOWING APPLICATIONS

The program initially received a grant of ₹5.2 lakhs to provide coaching to 60 tribal students. However, due to initial hesitation among students, the allocated seats remained vacant. Determined to bridge this gap, Mr. Vaghela and his team embarked on a mission to motivate tribal youth. They visited various villages, interacted with communities, and highlighted the importance of competitive exams for a brighter future. Additionally, advertisements were strategically placed to reach a wider audience.

The officer’s dedication and proactive approach yielded remarkable results. The initial target of 60 students was surpassed as applications poured in. Recognizing the enthusiasm and potential, Mr. Vaghela decided to expand the program, ultimately training a total of 152 students.

“Originally, we planned it for just 60 students but looking at the rush of students who were ready to enroll for the coaching and take classes for competitive exams, we ended up training 152 students altogether for an entire month,” the officer told Indian Masterminds.

COMPREHENSIVE SUPPORT FOR ASPIRANTS

The program wasn’t just about coaching. The grant also covered accommodation expenses for the students. They were provided comfortable lodging at the police headquarters, along with meals to ensure their well-being throughout the 30-day program.

“Instead of asking them to travel by train or bus daily to the headquarters, we wished to provide them a hassle-free training, and thereby, we prepared for their lodging in our headquarters itself,” shared Mr. Vaghela.

The training program offered a holistic approach, encompassing both physical and academic development. Physical training, including yoga, running, and jogging, was provided by trainers from the police headquarters, preparing students for the physical requirements of police entrance exams.

For academic development, the program partnered with a reputed foundation in Gujarat. Renowned educators from the foundation conducted intensive indoor training sessions for the entire month, covering all subjects relevant to competitive exams. Additionally, students were provided with comprehensive study materials to support their self-study endeavors.

“This initiative marks a first-of-its-kind effort in the Valsad district, specifically targeted towards empowering tribal youth through competitive exam preparation. While the students are yet to take their exams, the program has instilled a sense of purpose and ignited a passion for learning in them,” stated the officer.

ENVISIONING AN INCLUSIVE FUTURE

Buoyed by the program’s success, Mr. Vaghela has ambitious plans for the future. He envisions a large-scale seminar open to all communities and religions, not just restricted to tribal villages. This inclusive approach aims to empower students from all backgrounds, fostering a more equitable environment for competitive exam preparation.

The program’s positive impact extends beyond academic success. By providing a focused and constructive outlet, the initiative helps steer tribal youth away from potentially negative influences. By engaging them in studies and preparation, the program acts as a deterrent against involvement in anti-social activities.

Furthermore, the program addresses the prevalent trend of tribal youth working in factories. The one-month coaching program provided a valuable break, allowing them to focus on their academic aspirations. Looking ahead, Mr. Vaghela plans to introduce weekend classes, catering to students across Valsad from all backgrounds.

The officer’s dedication extended beyond securing grants. He spent over six months diligently convincing parents of the benefits of competitive exam preparation. He emphasized the potential for securing government jobs and building a brighter future for their families. This parental support proved to be a crucial factor in the program’s success.

By providing access to quality education, motivation, and a supportive environment, the program empowers them to compete on par with their peers and carve a brighter future for themselves and their communities. The officer’s commitment and vision to make quality education inclusive ensure a more equitable playing field for aspiring students across Valsad.
