Mr. Shesh Paul Vaid’s journey is a remarkable testament to dedication, bravery, and strategic leadership. Born and raised in Jammu & Kashmir, he has deep-rooted connections to the region, which eventually shaped his illustrious career in the Indian Police Service (IPS).

Mr. Vaid began his career with a posting as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Badgaon, a region fraught with challenges. His exceptional performance led to his promotion as Superintendent of Police (SP) in the same area, where he undertook numerous operations against militants. His relentless efforts and courage in the face of danger earned him the prestigious President’s Police Medal for Gallantry, highlighting his bravery and commitment to duty.

One of his significant contributions was being in charge of the first Anti-Terror Task Force, a crucial role that underscored his strategic acumen in combating terrorism. As Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Jammu, Mr. Vaid spearheaded a police-community partnership initiative, emphasizing the importance of strong police-public relations. He believed that a collaborative approach was essential for maintaining peace and order, particularly in a region as volatile as Jammu & Kashmir.

Understanding the threat of ethnic cleansing in Jammu, Mr. Vaid took proactive measures to empower local communities. He distributed rifles to ten villagers and established the first Village Defence Committee. These committees were pivotal in fostering a sense of security and self-reliance among villagers, though they faced significant challenges in preventing ethnic cleansing entirely.

Mr. Vaid’s career reached its zenith when he was appointed as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Jammu & Kashmir. Despite never imagining he would attain this position, his leadership and experience made him a natural fit for the role. Throughout his tenure, he faced numerous threats personally but remained undeterred, consistently prioritizing the safety and security of the region.

His story is not just one of professional achievement but also of personal resilience and dedication to service. Mr. Vaid’s insights into the latest changes in the justice system are informed by his extensive experience and deep understanding of the complexities of law enforcement in Jammu & Kashmir. His journey serves as an inspiration to many, showcasing the impact of determined and courageous leadership in the face of adversity.
