The First TDS Officer in the Country, he Disguised as Job Seeker to Unearth Major Tax Evasions

Sudhanshu Shekhar Jha, a 1991-batch IRS Officer, presently posted as Chief Commissioner Income Tax (CCIT), Jaipur gets into a candid conversation about his career and some of its highlights, how IT officials function. How he was selected into the IRS and how he used different tactics to detect major tax evasions? This is the first part of the interview.

This is the story of a Indian Revenue Officer who is a sportsperson, a film maker, a painter, a dramatist, a wildlife photographer, an excellent raconteur besides of course one of the finest officers in country’s income tax department. It was not for nothing that was honoured with Finance Minister’s Award For Excellence in August 2024.

His entry into the civil services was an accident. Though his father was a civil servant who sent him to Netarhat School in Jharkhand – reputed for sending maximum number of civil servants – Sudhanshu Shekhar Jha’s interest lay in arts, theatre and films. No wonder that his house near Delhi University, used to have musical evenings to be attended by well-known personalities like Vishal Bhardwaj, Manoj Bajpai, Vishwadeep and Avaneendra Thakur.

Yet, he cracked the prelims in first attempt and got a place in merit list in the second. But he only wanted to join the IRS. Please watch the interview to know the reason. And also how he became the first IRS officer to join TDS (Tax Deducted At Source) department.

He also talks about it was to join as IRS officer when the country was tasting first pangs of economic liberalization, how he disguised as a job seeker, studied engineering to get the job, prepared fake marksheet to detect one of the most bizzare TDS evasion scam way back in early 90s.
