Nirmal, Telangana: In a groundbreaking move that bridges the gap between rural education and cutting-edge science, four government schools in Nirmal district have become the first in Telangana to launch advanced Space Science Laboratories.
This first-of-its-kind initiative in the state was inaugurated with the support of the district administration under the visionary leadership of District Collector Abhilasha Abhinav. The project was implemented with a budget of ₹20 lakh, marking a major stride in delivering equitable scientific opportunities to students in government schools.
Bringing Astronomy to Villages
The new labs have been established in:
- Kasturba Gandhi Girls School, Ananthapet (Nirmal Mandal)
- Zilla Parishad High School, Son (Son Mandal)
- ZP High School, Poschal (Mamada Mandal)
- ZP High School, Bosi (Tanoor Mandal)
These schools are now equipped with tools and technologies that were once unimaginable in remote areas.
Equipped for the Future
Each Space Science Lab includes:
- High-resolution telescopes
- Virtual reality (VR) headsets
- Smart TVs with 3D simulations
Scientific models of satellites, planetary systems, and more
The aim is to provide hands-on learning experiences in areas like planetary motion, stellar evolution, space technology, and satellite engineering — subjects that are typically reserved for elite institutions.

Leadership and Vision
District Collector Abhilasha Abhinav, who led the initiative, said:
“This is more than an educational project. It is a social transformation. A young girl from Ananthapet or a boy from Bosi can now imagine becoming an astronaut or a scientist.”
The initiative reflects Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s vision for an inclusive and progressive education system in Telangana. Speaking earlier about the importance of such reforms, the CM noted:
“Talent exists equally in all corners of the state. It is opportunity that does not. This initiative is about creating that opportunity.”
Empowering First-Generation Learners
Officials believe the initiative will:
- Spark early interest in science and space exploration
- Help identify talent for future careers in ISRO, DRDO, NASA, and global scientific institutions
- Encourage first-generation learners through experiential education
The Space Science Labs are expected to inspire curiosity, increase STEM participation, and pave the way for scientific innovation in rural India.

Setting a Statewide Precedent
With this project, Nirmal district has not only empowered its students but also set a model for how rural education can be transformed through strategic innovation and political will.
Officials said this marks a major milestone in the state’s journey towards equitable education, particularly for students from economically and socially disadvantaged communities.
