North Sikkim: In the rugged, unforgiving terrain of North Sikkim, where icy rivers cut through the mountains and the air itself demands resilience, a young officer has become a timeless symbol of courage and selflessness. Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari, a 23-year-old officer of the Sikkim Scouts Regiment, gave his life in an extraordinary act of bravery while rescuing a fellow soldier from drowning during a routine patrol on May 22, 2025.
A Routine Patrol Turned into a Test of Character
Lieutenant Tiwari was leading a Route Opening Patrol (ROP) toward a Tactical Operating Base in a high-altitude area of Sikkim. At approximately 11:00 a.m., while crossing a makeshift log bridge over a roaring mountain stream, Agniveer Stephan Subba of the same patrol unit lost his balance and was swept away by the strong current.
Without a moment’s hesitation, Lieutenant Tiwari leapt into the water in an attempt to rescue the drowning soldier. He was joined by Naik Pukar Katel, and together they fought the frigid torrent to bring Agniveer Subba to safety.
A Life Saved, A Life Lost
While the mission to rescue Subba was successful, tragedy struck as Lieutenant Tiwari was caught by the current and carried away. Despite desperate efforts by his team, his body was found approximately 800 metres downstream after a 30-minute search.
His sacrifice stands as a profound act of leadership in action, putting the life of a comrade before his own – a reflection of the Indian Army’s highest ideals.

A Son of Ayodhya, A Soldier of Honour
Commissioned on December 14, 2024, Lieutenant Tiwari hailed from Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, a city steeped in cultural and spiritual heritage. He was the only son of a retired Indian Navy veteran, and his family has long embodied values of discipline, service, and patriotism.
His mortal remains were brought back to Ayodhya with full military honours, where he was cremated on the banks of the Saryu River – the same river by which he once dreamed of wearing the olive green.
A Nation Mourns, The Army Salutes
In a statement, the Indian Army paid tribute, saying – “Despite his tender age and brief service, Lieutenant Tiwari leaves behind a legacy of courage and camaraderie that will inspire generations of soldiers to come.”
The Army emphasized that in a world that often rewards longevity, Lieutenant Tiwari proved that true leadership isn’t measured in years but in actions. In the defining moment of his life, he chose courage, duty, and selflessness.

A Legacy That Lives On
Though barely six months into service, Lieutenant Tiwari’s actions will be remembered in military training academies, etched into regimental history, and retold to future officers as the gold standard of “Service Before Self.”
He is survived by his parents and a sister, but his memory will live on in every soldier who wears the uniform with honour and integrity.
Final Words
Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari may no longer walk among us, but the echo of his bravery will resound through the hills of Sikkim and beyond. His sacrifice is a solemn reminder that heroes aren’t born—they’re forged in moments of truth, when one heart dares to beat for another.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
May his story inspire countless others to serve with courage, compassion, and the kind of quiet heroism that changes lives-and saves them.
