Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh state government has extended the suspension of senior IPS officer N Sanjay for an additional 180 days or until further orders, whichever comes first. The extension, formalized through a Government Order (GO) issued on Tuesday, comes amid an ongoing investigation into serious allegations of financial misconduct.
Background: Suspension and Allegations
N Sanjay, a 1996-batch IPS officer, was initially suspended on December 3, 2024 over allegations of misappropriation and misuse of public funds during his tenure as Director General of the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Response and Fire Services. He is also accused of financial irregularities in his role as Additional Director General of Police at the Andhra Pradesh Criminal Investigation Department (AP CID), particularly regarding funds allocated for police training on the Prevention of Atrocities Act, 1989.
The officer is facing allegations related to the misuse of funds designated for training police personnel on the rights of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes under the said Act.
Criminal Case and Investigation
In response to these allegations, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) filed a criminal case against N Sanjay on December 24, 2024, charging him under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The investigation is still ongoing, with several key witnesses yet to be examined and important documents pending collection, as stated by the ACB.
Review Committee’s Recommendation
In light of the ongoing investigation, the review committee met on May 21, 2025, to assess the situation. Based on its recommendations, the committee advised the state government to extend N Sanjay’s suspension. The committee cited the risk of the suspended officer influencing the investigation as one of the key reasons for the extension.
Next Steps
The suspension extension will remain in effect for 180 days or until the investigation concludes, whichever comes earlier. The government has not ruled out further action depending on the outcome of the investigation.
