Experienced Mining Professional Asheesh Kumar Assumes Charge as Director (Business Development) at Coal India Ltd – Know More About Him

Kolkata: Asheesh Kumar has assumed charge as Director (Business Development) of Coal India Ltd. (CIL). Mukesh Choudhary, Director (Marketing), who was holding the additional charge of Director (Business Development), ceased to hold the position effective 21 August 2025.

Appointment and Tenure

Mr. Kumar’s appointment is for a period of five years from the date of assumption of charge, or until the date of his superannuation, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Vast Experience in Mining and Strategic Planning

An accomplished mining professional, Mr. Kumar brings over 30 years of experience across operations, contract management, vigilance, policy formulation, project monitoring, and strategic planning.

He joined Coal India in 1994 as a Graduate Engineering Trainee (Mining) at Central Coalfields Limited. He holds a B.Tech from ISM Dhanbad and an MBA from BITs Mesra.

Notable Achievements and Contributions

Prior to this assignment, Mr. Kumar served as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the Ministry of Coal, Government of India. He has spearheaded coal gasification projects, led Coal India’s diversification into critical minerals, and established global partnerships to strengthen future-ready capabilities.

As Adviser to the Project in the Ministry of Coal, he contributed to policy reforms enhancing ease of doing business in the coal sector. His leadership in critical mineral projects and strategic initiatives has been widely recognised within the industry.
