New Delhi: The Ministry of Power, Government of India, has further extended the additional charge of the post of Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of SJVN Limited to Mr. Bhupendra Gupta (DIN: 06940941), who is currently serving as CMD of NHPC Limited, with effect from November 1, 2025. The extension is valid for a period of three months or until a full-time incumbent is appointed, whichever is earlier.
Appointment Details and Eligibility
Mr. Bhupendra Gupta, a distinguished professional in the Indian power sector, is not related to any director on the Board of SJVN Limited and is not debarred from holding the office of Director by any authority, including the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). His appointment underscores the Ministry’s confidence in his expertise to lead one of India’s key power sector Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) during this interim period.
Illustrious Career in Power Sector
Mr. Gupta holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and an MBA in Operations Management. He began his professional journey with ACC Ltd in 1991 and entered the Central Public Sector Undertaking (CPSU) sector by joining SJVN in 1995, where he served for 12 years in various capacities. During this tenure, he oversaw the planning, erection, commissioning, and O&M of electromechanical equipment for the 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Plant, India’s largest operational hydroelectric project. He also served on deputation in Bhutan at the 1,020 MW Tala Hydroelectric Power Project from 2002 to 2005.
Mr. Gupta later joined REC Ltd. in 2007, handling project financing for hydro and thermal power projects for six years, and subsequently served as Additional CEO of two REC subsidiaries: REC Transmission Projects Co. Ltd. and REC Power Distribution Co. Ltd. He led execution, project management, and consultancy for power sector initiatives across India, successfully implementing flagship government schemes such as Saubhagya, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY), and PMDP.
In December 2020, he was deputed to the Punatsangchhu Hydroelectric Project Authority in Bhutan as Director (Technical), where he oversaw construction activities and resolved long-pending contractual issues. He later joined THDCIL as Director (Technical) on June 9, 2023, providing strategic leadership in commissioning Unit-1 (660 MW) of Khurja STPP and addressing civil, mechanical, and operational challenges at Tehri PSP, leading to successful commissioning of Unit-1 & 2 (250 MW each).

With a career spanning over 34 years, including 31 years in Power CPSUs, Mr. Bhupendra Gupta has made significant contributions across hydro, thermal, renewable energy, transmission, and distribution sectors. His expertise covers planning, design, execution, contract and project management, and O&M of large-scale power projects, making him one of the most experienced leaders in India’s power sector.
The extension of his additional charge at SJVN Limited reflects the Ministry of Power’s trust in his leadership and experience to continue guiding the PSU toward achieving its operational and strategic goals.
