Gandhinagar: Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel inaugurated the 76th Van Mahotsav from Galteshwar, underscoring the state’s commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development. The event celebrated the long-standing tradition of promoting tree plantation and green initiatives across the state.
Gujarat’s Green Vision and Commitment to Sustainability
CM Bhupendra Patel highlighted how Gujarat has successfully implemented environmental initiatives under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He discussed Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) as a key strategy to address climate change, alongside efforts in renewable energy such as solar rooftop energy. The state is also pushing forward with water conservation programs like Catch the Rain and Amrit Sarovar, while massive tree plantation drives under Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam aim to enhance the green cover.

Key Highlights from the Van Mahotsav Inauguration
As part of the inauguration, CM Patel dedicated the newly developed Galteshwar Van, a 7-hectare forest located in Kheda district, as the 24th cultural forest in Gujarat. This move emphasizes the importance of local forests and aims to raise awareness about the ecological benefits of forest cover.
Additionally, CM Patel launched the Gujarat State Wetland Authority website and initiated village forest development, which includes distributing checks to gram panchayats and taluka panchayats for their contributions to the income generated from strip plantations.
Gujarat’s Green Achievements and Future Targets
Gujarat’s efforts to expand its green cover have been exemplary. The state has embraced the Miyawaki plantation method, creating 207 urban forest belts and 82 Namo Vat Vans, contributing significantly to its environmental sustainability.
Under the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam initiative, Gujarat ranked second in the country for planting 17.5 crore saplings last year. This year, the state set a target to plant 10.35 crore saplings across the region. These efforts are critical in addressing climate change and promoting a sustainable future for Gujarat.

Cultural and Environmental Symbiosis
While discussing the importance of the festival, CM Patel said, “If we show care and respect for nature, it will sustain and protect us.” He stressed that the state’s green initiatives align with the cultural values of Gujarat, where people believe in the divinity of nature. The Chief Minister also commended Prime Minister Modi’s efforts in transforming Van Mahotsav into a Jan Mahotsav (People’s Festival), with a strong emphasis on environmental balance and sustainability.
Social Forestry and State’s Future Green Initiatives
Forest and Environment Minister Mulubhai Bera elaborated on the state’s social forestry projects, which aim to plant saplings in areas of 39,295 hectares under social forestry programs. The Gram Vatika model will see 50 saplings planted in 1,000 villages, with plans to develop Sacred Groves and expand green initiatives by 2025-26.
Additionally, 35,000 hectares of agroforestry will be planted along roadsides and coastal highways under the Harit Van Path scheme, contributing to the state’s ongoing greening efforts. These initiatives will help reduce the carbon footprint and contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment.

Government’s Focus on Clean and Green Growth
Minister of State for Forest and Environment, Mukesh Patel, emphasized that the state’s push for Green Growth is an essential pillar of its development. He highlighted efforts in Kheda district, such as Van Kavach at Govindpura and the plantation under the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaign at Pipalag village. These programs align with Gujarat’s broader mission to achieve sustainable growth through green initiatives.
By 2025-26, the state plans to plant additional saplings along 35,000 hectares of agroforestry on farms and 100 hectares along roads and highways, continuing to prioritize environmental sustainability.
