Patna: Bihar has made significant strides in strengthening its rural infrastructure, with over 34,000 km of roads constructed under the Chief Minister’s Gram Sampark Yojana (CMGSY), bringing a new dimension to the state’s social and economic landscape. This initiative has provided all-weather paved road connectivity to more than 24,000 villages, enhancing accessibility and boosting rural development.
Focus on Smaller Hamlets Beyond PMGSY Coverage
While the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) primarily connects villages with populations up to 500, the CMGSY, launched in 2013, focuses on connecting smaller hamlets and remote settlements. The rural works department has approved 43,423 km across 31,594 rural roads, of which over 78% of projects are now complete, marking a major milestone in rural connectivity.
District-wise Achievements
Muzaffarpur leads the state in road construction under this scheme, with 2,345 km completed, followed by Madhubani (2,240 km), Araria (2,137 km), and East Champaran (1,973 km). Other top-performing districts include Purnia, Katihar, Saran, Darbhanga, West Champaran, and Gopalganj, reflecting a widespread and balanced implementation across Bihar.
