Patna: In a major push to strengthen rural infrastructure and improve connectivity, the Bihar government will begin construction of 704 new bridges across the state from September 10 under the ambitious “Mukhyamantri Gramin Setu Yojana” for the financial year 2025-26. The government has allocated ₹3,688 crore for this initiative, which aims to provide permanent and safe road connections to thousands of villages.
Strict Directives to Contractors
The Rural Works Department has issued clear instructions to contractors that construction must commence by September 10. Failure to comply will result in strict action, including forfeiture of security deposits and blacklisting.
Addressing Missing and Damaged Bridges
The scheme focuses on areas where road connectivity is hindered due to missing or dilapidated bridges. New strong bridges will replace old structures, connect incomplete routes, and repair bridges damaged by floods or natural calamities. Existing bridges with unfinished approach roads will also be completed to ensure seamless travel for villagers.
District-Wise Construction Plan
Bridge construction has been approved in districts across North and South Bihar, with the highest number in East Champaran (56), followed by Darbhanga (38), Gaya, Siwan, and Sitamarhi (30 each), Saran and Vaishali (28 each), Bhagalpur and Gopalganj (27 each), Rohtas and Sheikhpura (26 each), Nalanda (24), Begusarai (20), and Patna (18).
Community-Centric Approach
The scheme also incorporates public demand collected through the “Janata ke Darbar Mein Mukhyamantri” program and public announcements made by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, highlighting the plan’s participatory approach rather than being a purely departmental initiative.
Impact on Rural Life
The government expects the scheme to transform village life, enabling farmers to transport produce to markets, children to travel safely to schools, and residents to access healthcare in emergencies more efficiently. Beyond connectivity, these bridges are seen as a foundation for the social and economic development of rural Bihar.
