Patna: The Bihar Agriculture Department held a discussion at Krishi Bhawan, Mithapur, on Monday to explore ways to expand the cultivation of pulses, oilseeds, and maize in the state. The session emphasized the use of improved seeds and intensive farming techniques to enhance crop productivity and support farmers’ income.

Advanced Seeds and Intensive Farming Can Increase Yields

During the discussion, Principal Secretary of Agriculture, Pankaj Kumar, highlighted that farmers can increase pulses and oilseeds production by adopting advanced seed varieties and practicing intensive farming methods. He stressed that agriculture in Bihar should evolve from mere subsistence to a source of prosperity for farmers, and the Agriculture Department is committed to making this transition possible.

“Over the past 20 years, Bihar has achieved significant progress in crop production, especially in paddy and wheat. Now it is crucial to focus on increasing pulses and oilseeds production,” he said.

Maize Emerges as a Cash Crop in Kosi Region

The Principal Secretary also pointed out that maize production in the Kosi region has risen significantly, transforming it into a cash crop. He highlighted the potential for related businesses and industries around maize cultivation, which could create substantial employment opportunities in the region.

Farmers are encouraged to take advantage of the government’s agricultural irrigation scheme, which provides subsidized electricity, to cultivate pulses, oilseeds, and maize on fallow lands. “It is time for Bihar’s farmers to explore agricultural business opportunities and expand beyond traditional farming,” he added.

Expert Guidance and Technical Support for Farmers

Director of Agriculture, Saurabh Suman Yadav, said the discussion would effectively contribute to boosting pulses, oilseeds, and maize production. “Introducing crop diversification will enhance food security in the state,” he added.

Special Director Veerendra Prasad Yadav urged agricultural scientists to take special measures to develop advanced seed varieties and support higher yields.

During the technical session, agricultural scientists provided hands-on guidance to farmers, teaching cost-effective techniques to maximize production. A large number of farmers attended the discussion, gaining knowledge about modern farming methods and innovations to improve productivity and income.

Promoting Agricultural Prosperity in Bihar

The event highlighted Bihar’s commitment to modernizing agriculture and supporting farmers in adopting innovative techniques. With a focus on pulses, oilseeds, and maize, the state aims to enhance crop diversity, increase farmers’ earnings, and create employment opportunities in agriculture-related industries.
