In a landmark decision aimed at easing the financial burden on households, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar on Thursday announced free electricity for all domestic consumers in the state for up to 125 units, effective from August 1, 2025.
“We have been providing electricity at a cheaper rate since the start. We have now decided that from August 1, 2025, that is, from the July bill itself, all domestic consumers of the state will not have to pay any money for electricity up to 125 units,” Mr. Kumar posted on X.
Over 1.67 Crore Families to Benefit
According to Mr. Kumar, this scheme will benefit around 1 crore 67 lakh families across Bihar. The state government is also planning to install solar panels on household rooftops or in nearby public spaces with the consent of consumers.
He added that the initiative would be implemented within three years, aiming for a more sustainable and self-reliant power system.
Support for the Poor Under Kutir Jyoti Scheme
Mr. Kumar stated that under the Kutir Jyoti Scheme, the government would fully fund solar power installations for the extremely poor. For other households, appropriate financial support will be extended to help them transition to solar energy.
Job Bonanza: TRE-4 to Fill Over 1.20 Lakh Teaching Posts
In another major development, Mr. Nitish Kumar has instructed the Education Department to identify vacant teaching posts and initiate the process to conduct the Teachers’ Recruitment Examination (TRE)-4 at the earliest.
The state had earlier appointed 1.70 lakh and 70,000 teachers through TRE-1 and TRE-2, while 66,603 teachers were recruited under TRE-3 out of 87,774 notified vacancies.
Reservation for Women and Exam Timeline
“The education department has been instructed to identify vacancies of teachers in government schools and initiate the process to conduct the TRE-4 examination at the earliest. The state government has already clarified that the benefit of 35 per cent reservation for women in appointments will be given to those who are residents of Bihar,” Mr. Kumar shared on X.
According to education department officials, over 1.20 lakh teacher aspirants are likely to benefit from the upcoming TRE-4, for which the notification is expected soon.
BPSC to Conduct the Examination Before Model Code Kicks In
The Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) will conduct the TRE-4 for primary, middle, secondary, and senior secondary levels.
Bihar Education Minister Mr. Sunil Kumar confirmed to reporters that “TRE-4 will be held before the model code of conduct comes into force in the state.”
These twin announcements—free electricity and massive teacher recruitment—mark significant welfare and employment initiatives by the Bihar government ahead of the 2025 timeline.
