The transfer was carried out during a function held at the Chief Minister’s official residence in Patna. According to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), the assistance is aimed at providing urgent relief to families severely impacted by flooding caused by continuous torrential rainfall.
Increased Gratuitous Relief for Families
Mr. Kumar had recently announced an increase in gratuitous relief from Rs. 6,000 to Rs. 7,000 per family to ensure better support for affected households. The enhanced compensation highlights the government’s commitment to strengthening disaster response mechanisms and addressing the financial challenges faced by vulnerable communities.
Officials confirmed that 6,51,602 families have benefitted from the initiative so far, covering districts including Bhojpur, Patna, Saran, Vaishali, Samastipur, Begusarai, Lakhisarai, Munger, Khagaria, Bhagalpur, and Katihar.
State Machinery on High Alert
The Chief Minister has directed senior officials to remain vigilant as more rainfall is expected in September, which may exacerbate the flood situation. He emphasised the need for proactive coordination among departments to ensure rapid relief distribution, rehabilitation measures, and uninterrupted monitoring of river systems across the state.
Those present at the meeting included Disaster Management Minister Mr. Vijay Kumar Mandal, Chief Secretary Mr. Amrit Lal Meena (1989-batch IAS officer), Development Commissioner Mr. Pratyaya Amrit (1991-batch IAS officer), and Water Resources Department Principal Secretary Mr. Santosh Kumar Mall (1997-batch IAS officer), along with other senior state government officials.
Government’s Commitment to Disaster Management
The Bihar government has been focusing on strengthening its disaster management framework by combining direct benefit transfer systems with real-time monitoring of disaster-prone areas. Officials stressed that such financial aid not only provides immediate relief but also reflects the state’s emphasis on governance transparency, accountability, and efficient service delivery.
This initiative underscores the government’s long-term strategy of integrating technology, bureaucracy, and grassroots support systems to minimise the socio-economic impact of recurring floods in Bihar.
