Patna: In a significant move ahead of the upcoming assembly elections, the Bihar cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, approved the launch of the Mukhya Mantri Divyangjan Udyami Yojana. This new initiative aims to promote entrepreneurship among specially-abled persons by providing them with substantial financial support.
Financial Support for Specially-Abled Entrepreneurs
Under the scheme, specially-abled individuals will receive a ₹5 lakh interest-free loan along with an additional ₹5 lakh subsidy, enabling them to start or expand their businesses. This combined financial assistance of up to ₹10 lakh is designed to remove economic barriers and encourage self-reliance within this marginalized community.
Initial Rollout and Expansion Plans
The scheme will be introduced this year, initially benefiting 100 specially-abled entrepreneurs, with plans to expand as more applications are received. The program will function as a distinct category under the broader Mukhya Mantri Udyami Yojana, which already supports other groups like minorities and women.
Ongoing Initiatives to Promote Specially-Abled Artisans
Bandana Preyashi, Secretary of the Social Welfare Department, highlighted that the scheme’s objective is to foster entrepreneurship and economic independence among specially-abled persons. She also pointed out ongoing efforts such as the ‘Divya Kala Mela’ in Patna, which showcases and promotes products created by specially-abled artisans and entrepreneurs.
Additional Financial Grants and Future Plans
In addition to this scheme, the state government recently approved financial grants for specially-abled candidates who clear preliminary exams of the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) and the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC)—₹50,000 and ₹1 lakh respectively—to support their preparation for mains exams.
The Social Welfare Department has also indicated plans to introduce further schemes aimed at empowering the specially-abled community, reflecting the government’s commitment to inclusive development.
