Patna: More than 4,90,957 persons with disabilities have availed free travel facilities in Bihar’s state-run buses between 2017 and 2023. Along with them, 5,320 freedom fighters and JP movement veterans have also received the benefit during the same period, taking the total number of beneficiaries to over 4,96,000. The data was shared on Tuesday by Bihar Transport Minister Shravan Kumar during a departmental review meeting.
The minister said that, as per the current rules, persons with disabilities, freedom fighters, and JP movement veterans are entitled to completely free travel up to 50 km in government buses. For journeys beyond 50 km, they are required to pay only half the fare. This provision is applicable on all government buses operating across the state.
State Bus Operations Across Six Divisions
The transport department operates buses under the Bihar State Road Transport Corporation (BSRTC) in six divisions—Patna, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Purnea, Gaya, and Bhagalpur.
Among these, Gaya division recorded the highest number of beneficiaries, with 4,82,200 persons with disabilities and 5,320 JP veterans travelling free of cost. The Gaya unit alone has spent ₹25 crore to support this initiative.
The number of persons with disabilities who availed free travel in other divisions are as follows:
- Patna: 4,016
- Muzaffarpur: 3,528
- Darbhanga: 303
- Bhagalpur: 669
- Purnea: 91
A Gesture of Respect for Veterans and the Disabled
Minister Shravan Kumar emphasized that this initiative is not merely a transport facility but a mark of respect for elderly freedom fighters and persons with disabilities. He said the scheme reflects the Bihar government’s commitment to “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas.”
He added that private buses and auto-rickshaws often charge higher fares, making state-run buses a more economical option for the public. The department, he said, is working positively to ease the financial burden on passengers while ensuring inclusive mobility across Bihar.
