Patna: The Bihar government has taken significant steps to empower persons with disabilities (PwDs) by providing them with battery-operated tricycles to enhance mobility, education, and employment opportunities. Under the Directorate of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, a total of 28,441 tricycles have been distributed over the past four years.
Annual Distribution Figures
The tricycle distribution scheme has steadily benefited a large number of PwDs across the state. Annual distribution details are as follows:
- FY 2022-23: 8,956 tricycles distributed
- FY 2023-24: 9,416 tricycles distributed
- FY 2024-25: 6,307 tricycles distributed
- FY 2025-26 (till date): 3,762 tricycles distributed
In addition to tricycles, beneficiaries are also provided with safety equipment such as helmets to ensure secure usage.

Focus on Mobility and Self-Reliance
The scheme specifically targets PwDs whose walking capacity is 60% or more impaired and whose educational or work institutions are located more than three kilometers away from their residence. The initiative aims to:
- Facilitate daily mobility
- Promote self-reliance and independence
- Enhance social participation and dignity
The tricycles serve as a practical solution for PwDs to overcome mobility challenges while enabling access to education, employment, and social inclusion.
Government’s Commitment to Empower Persons with Disabilities
Through this initiative, Bihar’s Social Welfare Department demonstrates its commitment to improving quality of life, accessibility, and opportunities for persons with disabilities. The tricycle distribution program not only supports physical mobility but also fosters confidence, self-esteem, and social respect for beneficiaries across the state.
