Patna: The Bihar government is fast-tracking the establishment of new sugar mills and the revival of closed units across the state. The Sugar Industry Department, under ACS K. Senthil Kumar, has directed district magistrates of 14 districts to identify suitable land and submit reports within a week to ensure swift implementation.

14 Districts Tasked with Land Identification

In a letter to the district magistrates, ACS K. Senthil Kumar instructed officials to select around 100 acres of land per sugar mill for new setups and the rehabilitation of closed mills. The districts involved include Patna, Nawada, Vaishali, Saran, Siwan, Gopalganj, Bettiah, Motihari, Muzaffarpur, Samastipur, Gaya, Shivhar, Rohtas, and Purnia.

The selected land will also consider proximity to 30,000–40,000 acres of sugarcane cultivation and availability of irrigation facilities. Officials have been asked to review both private and government land options, including sites of old or defunct mills.

Government’s Vision for a Stronger Sugar Industry

The initiative comes under the state government’s “7 Nischay-3” mission, aimed at promoting prosperous industries and a stronger Bihar. The government plans to set up 25 new sugar mills while reviving non-operational ones.

A high-level committee chaired by the Chief Secretary has been approved to oversee policy decisions and implementation strategies for this initiative.

Special Agricultural Task Force to Support Mill Establishment

To ensure the sustainability of new and revived sugar mills, ACS K. Senthil Kumar has directed the formation of a special agricultural task force. The task force will review sugarcane cultivation potential and irrigation facilities in and around proposed mill locations.

District-Level Reporting Deadline

All 14 district magistrates have been instructed to submit land identification reports within seven days, enabling the government to move swiftly on site selection, policy framing, and eventual mill construction.

About Bihar’s Sugar Industry Initiative:

Under Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, the Bihar government is focusing on reviving closed sugar mills and setting up new units to strengthen the state’s agro-industrial sector. This initiative aims to boost sugarcane cultivation, create employment, and enhance local economic growth.
