Patna: Bihar is set to host the country’s largest orthopaedic hospital, as newly reinstated Health Minister Mangal Pandey—taking charge for the fourth time—announced a major push to strengthen the state’s healthcare infrastructure. Pandey said a 400-bed state-of-the-art Orthopaedic Hospital will be constructed near the Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan Orthopaedic Hospital at a cost of ₹215 crore, with a targeted completion timeline of just three months.
This facility is expected to significantly benefit patients across Bihar suffering from bone and joint-related ailments.
32,700 Health Appointments in Final Stages
Highlighting a massive recruitment drive, the minister said the Health Department is filling over 26,000 vacant posts, with many at the final stage of appointment. These include:
- 663 General Medical Officer posts by December
- 808 Dentist posts by December
- 11,389 Staff Nurse posts (exam completed)
- 12,627 paramedical posts (exam completed), including pharmacists, lab technicians, X-ray technicians, ECG technicians, dressers, operation theatre assistants, and dental hygienists
Under the National Health Mission (NHM), the state will additionally fill:
- 220 Ophthalmic Assistants
- 1,504 AYUSH Medical Officers
- 5,000+ ANMs
- 36 Specialist Doctors, 449 General Medical Officers, and 216 CHOs within a month
In total, around 32,700 appointments will be completed within the next four months, Pandey said.

610 New Health & Wellness Centres Coming Soon
Pandey announced that 610 new Health and Wellness Centres will be inaugurated soon as part of the ongoing expansion of rural and urban health services.
He added that more than 4 crore Ayushman Bharat cards have been issued in Bihar and that the state spends ₹350 crore annually under the Chief Minister Health Scheme to support patients.
The minister reaffirmed that the government’s goal is to ensure high-quality healthcare “from cities to villages,” with a renewed focus on infrastructure, staffing, and accessibility across Bihar.
