In a major infrastructural push, the Bihar Cabinet, under the leadership of Chief Minister Mr. Nitish Kumar, has approved the ambitious Ganga Path Project in Munger and Bhagalpur districts. This development aims to address growing traffic congestion in urban areas and enhance connectivity along the banks of the river Ganga.
42-Km Elevated Marine Drive from Safiabad to Sultanganj
As per the press note issued by Mr. Sandeep Kumar R Pudkalkatti, Secretary of the Road Construction Department, Bihar, the Ganga Path will be a 42-kilometre four-lane elevated marine drive starting from Safiabad (Munger) and passing through Bariyarpur and Ghorghat to Sultanganj.
This elevated corridor will be constructed under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) at an estimated cost of Rs. 5,129.80 crore. It will serve as a bypass route, reducing congestion within the cities of Munger and Bhagalpur by offering an alternative, uninterrupted traffic route.
Improved Traffic, Reduced Accidents and Pollution
The elevated design of the Ganga Path is expected to significantly ease urban traffic pressure by separating local traffic from long-distance commuters. The structure will enhance road safety by reducing pedestrian-vehicle conflict and road accidents. Additionally, it is expected to cut down on fuel usage and air pollution, making it both a transport and environmental boon.
Scenic Views and Tourist Appeal Along the Ganga
One of the most attractive aspects of this project is the scenic riverfront experience it will offer. Residents and travelers will be able to enjoy the majestic views of the Ganga, especially during sunrise and sunset. The marine drive is also set to become a tourist destination, with plans for walking paths, recreational spaces, and peaceful zones for the public to relax by the river.
Entertainment and Commercial Boost for the Region
The Ganga Path will not only serve as a transit route but will also offer multiple commercial opportunities. Plans include the development of cafes, restaurants, shopping complexes, and entertainment hubs along the route, which are expected to create local employment and stimulate economic growth in the district.
Boost in Religious and Cultural Significance of Ghats
With this project, the importance of over a dozen ghats along the Ganga in Munger is expected to rise. Ghats such as Hemjapur, Shivkund, Farda, Domantha, Soji Ghat, Babua Ghat, Kashtharani Ghat, Sitakund Deeh Ghat, Maniyarchak Ghat, Bariyarpur, Kalyanpur, and Ghorghat will become more accessible and may see increased footfall, enhancing their cultural and religious significance.
What is the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM)?
The Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) is a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model used in infrastructure development, particularly in road construction. It combines features of Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) and Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) Annuity models. Under HAM:
- The government contributes 40% of the project cost during the construction phase.
- The remaining 60% is financed by the private developer, who recovers the investment through fixed annuity payments from the government over time.
The Ganga Path project is not only a step toward better transportation but also a symbol of modernization, economic revitalization, and cultural preservation for Bihar. Once completed, it is expected to become a model project for integrated urban planning and sustainable development along India’s riverfronts.
