Patna: In a groundbreaking initiative for women empowerment, Bihar is setting a new benchmark by putting women at the helm of its public transport system. The state is introducing a fleet of Pink Buses, where women will not only travel but also operate these buses, transforming the way women experience mobility and work. Once an industry dominated by men, the public transport sector is now opening doors for women to take charge, from driving to ticketing.
Women Drivers Training for Pink Buses in Bihar
Currently, 13 women are undergoing rigorous training at the Institute of Driving and Traffic Research (IDTR) in Aurangabad. These women are receiving training on driving heavy motor vehicles (HMV), learning road safety protocols, engine basics, and vehicle maintenance. They are practicing on simulators and preparing for the Pink Bus operations, which are set to launch by March. After completing their training, they will be ready to drive Pink Buses, a symbol of women’s empowerment in Bihar.
Instructor Anirudh Kumar highlights that the program is not just teaching driving skills but also instilling confidence and leadership qualities in these women. “These women are not just learning how to drive, but they are learning to lead, becoming role models for others,” he added.

Historic Debut at Republic Day Parade
A historic moment is set to take place during the upcoming Republic Day (26th January) celebrations at Gandhi Maidan in Patna. For the first time, Mahadalit women will be seen driving Pink Buses as part of the transport department’s float. These six women will make history by becoming the first-ever female bus drivers in Bihar, symbolizing a monumental shift in both women’s participation in public transport and their representation in leadership roles.
Empowering Women with Employment Opportunities
The Pink Bus project is not just about providing safe and reliable transport for women but also creating a wealth of employment opportunities. Soon, the state government plans to hire 250 women drivers and 250 female conductors (helpers) to operate the buses. Currently, 100 Pink Buses are running across 10 districts of Bihar, including Patna, Gaya, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Purnia, and Katihar. These buses ensure that hundreds of women travel daily without fear, in an environment designed exclusively for their comfort and safety.
All-Women Bus Service: A New Milestone in Women Empowerment
In the near future, Pink Buses will see women not just driving and conducting, but also occupying seats as passengers. This all-women operation will turn the buses into an ideal mode of transport for women, ensuring that the journey is safe and empowering in every sense. The Pink Bus initiative represents not just a public transportation service but also a symbol of women’s economic independence, leadership, and self-reliance.
A Step Towards a Gender-Equal Future
The Pink Bus initiative in Bihar is more than just a transportation project—it’s a powerful statement of women’s growing role in shaping society and the economy. By involving women in every aspect of the service, from driving to ticketing, Bihar is not only ensuring safety for women commuters but also offering them a platform to thrive economically and professionally.
