Patna: The dream of owning a permanent home has become a reality for over 40 lakh economically weaker families in Bihar, thanks to the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin) [PMAY-G]. This flagship rural housing initiative has provided secure and dignified living spaces to families previously residing in kuccha and dilapidated houses.

Between the financial years 2016-17 and 2021-22, the state constructed 36.61 lakh pucca houses, while 2.88 lakh more homes were completed between 2021-22 and 2025-26. In total, Bihar has delivered permanent housing solutions to 39.49 lakh beneficiaries, with an investment of over ₹53,952 crore.

Phased Approval and Construction of Homes

The PMAY-G program follows a phased approach:

  • Phase 1 (2016-17 to 2021-22): 37.58 lakh applications received administrative approval, out of which 36.61 lakh homes were completed.
  • Phase 2 (2024-25 to 2025-26): 12.19 lakh applications approved, with 2.88 lakh houses completed.

This phased construction has ensured systematic delivery of homes, bringing stability and dignity to rural households.

Financial Assistance and Incentives

Each eligible beneficiary receives ₹1.20 lakh in financial assistance for home construction, disbursed in three installments of ₹40,000 each. Additionally:

  • Mahatma Gandhi NREGA (MGNREGA) wages: ₹22,950 for 90 days of labor.
  • Sanitation Incentive: ₹12,000 for toilet construction.

In total, each beneficiary receives ₹1,54,950, ensuring homes are both safe and sanitary.

Impact on Rural Communities

According to Shrawan Kumar, Minister of Rural Development and Transport, Bihar, the scheme has significantly improved living conditions and personal security for rural populations. The government aims to provide pucca houses to the remaining 12 lakh homeless families and is conducting surveys to identify additional beneficiaries in rural areas.

PMAY-G has not only fulfilled the dream of home ownership but also strengthened the foundation for inclusive rural development, empowering vulnerable families with security, dignity, and long-term stability.
