Indian Masterminds Stories

Patna: Bihar has reported a decline in major crimes, including murder, dacoity and rioting, along with major expansion of its police force and anti-Naxal operations.

The state has also strengthened its police infrastructure and intensified efforts against organised crime and Left Wing Extremism. These measures are aimed at improving law enforcement, speeding up investigations and enhancing public safety across Bihar.

Major Crimes Decline

Home Department Secretary Pranav Kumar said cases declined compared with the previous year:

  • Murder: Down 10.1%
  • Dacoity: Down 31.32%
  • Rioting: Down 18.97%

DGP Vinay Kumar attributed the improvement to faster police response, better investigation and stronger policing.

LWE-Affected Districts Fall to Zero

Officials highlighted Bihar’s progress in tackling Left Wing Extremism:

  • LWE-affected districts declined from 22 in 2013 to zero, with officials declaring LWE eliminated from the state.
  • Two to three remaining Naxals from Munger’s Bhimbandh area surrendered this year.
  • The Centre has identified Aurangabad, Gaya, Jamui and Lakhisarai as Legacy and Thrust districts.

Police Force Gets Major Boost

More than 50,000 appointments have been made in Bihar Police over the past one-and-a-half years, accounting for around 40% of the current force.

Police strength has reached around 1.21 lakh.

Over 22,000 trained constables have recently joined service.

Another 19,800 constables are set to begin training from August 17.

Recruitment for 26,574 constable posts is underway.

New buildings have been constructed for around 600 police stations to improve police infrastructure. Police made over 2 lakh arrests by June 2026, while around 3.75 lakh cases remain pending and 4,000–5,000 additional cases are being disposed of. The use of forensic services has also increased significantly, reaching nearly 20,000 cases.

Cybercrime Remains a Challenge

Cybercrime has emerged as a key challenge for Bihar Police, with dedicated cyber police stations now operational in every district. Around 7,000 cybercrime FIRs have been registered, with nearly 16% of the money recovered and returned.

Bihar Police Gets President’s Colour

Bihar Police has received the prestigious President’s Colour Award, the highest national honour for a police organisation for exceptional service and professionalism.

On Independence Day:

  • 18 Bihar Police personnel will receive gallantry, meritorious or distinguished service medals.
  • Seven personnel will receive ₹51,000 each from the state government.

The latest figures highlight Bihar Police’s focus on crime control, manpower expansion, forensic investigation and technology-driven policing, while cybercrime and pending cases remain key areas requiring continued attention.
