Under the leadership of Chief Minister Hemant Soren, a significant development unfolded for Jharkhand’s economy after BMW Industries announced that it would set up a new steel plant in Bokaro with an investment of Rs. 803 crore. The project is expected to generate both direct and indirect employment opportunities for thousands of people in the state.
Mr. Harsh Bansal, Managing Director of BMW Industries, confirmed that the company is establishing a cold rolling unit with a capacity of 5 lakh tonnes. This investment is being made under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme launched by the Ministry of Steel in 2021, aimed at expanding production of value-added steel and upgrading India’s steel sector technologically.
High-Quality Steel for Key Sectors
The new plant will produce colour-coated materials and advanced alloy and non-alloy coated products for critical industries including infrastructure, construction, automotive, renewable energy and defence. According to Mr. Bansal, production of colour-coated steel is expected to begin in the third quarter of the current financial year, with revenues starting from the fourth quarter.
BMW Industries currently manufactures TMT bars, pipes and tubes, cold rolled and galvanized products. With this expansion, the company aims to enhance its portfolio and cater to high-demand segments.
Timeline and Approvals in Place
The Bokaro steel complex has already received approval from the Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board. The factory is planned to be completed in two years, with the first unit scheduled to start operations in the financial year 2026.
Officials noted that this investment aligns with Jharkhand’s vision of becoming a key industrial hub and highlights the state government’s role in facilitating large-scale private sector projects through policy support.
