Senior IPS Nitin Agarwal, the incumbent Director General of the Border Security Force (BSF), has abruptly been repatriated to his home cadre upon approval by the Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC). Officer Agarwal is a 1989-batch Kerala cadre IPS officer who is due to retire in 2026.
IPS Nitin Agarwal’s deputy, IPS Y B Khurania, who was posted as Special DG (West) in BSF, was also repatriated to his home cadre in Odisha. Mr. Khurania, a 1990-batch Odisha cadre officer, was repatriated to his home cadre in the backdrop of speculations that his name is being considered by the Odisha government for appointment as the new Director General of Police (DGP) of the state. Since Odisha doesn’t have a regular DGP, IPS Arun Kumar Sarangi (1990 batch) is the DGP in charge, the recent development has only given stimulus to the ongoing speculations.
Officer Khurania had earlier served as the Superintendent of Police of Nayagarh, Jajpur, Rourkela, Mayurbhanj and Ganjam districts.
Besides, he also served as Southern Range and Northern Range DIG, Additional Commissioner of Police and Commissioner of Police of Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Twin City, Director, BPSPA-cum-IG Training and Special DG (Operations) at the BSF Headquarters in New Delhi.
