In a significant move against corruption, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has successfully obtained an order from a Special Court in Ghaziabad for the attachment of 14 properties, collectively valued at over ₹7 crore, belonging to Amit Nigam, a former Additional Commissioner of Income Tax. These properties are allegedly acquired through corrupt practices during his tenure in various roles within the Income Tax Department.
Properties Across Multiple Locations Under Scrutiny
The properties that have come under the radar of the CBI are spread across multiple locations, including Ghaziabad, Lucknow, Hardoi, Barabanki, and even Goa. The agency has now attached these assets as part of its investigation into a disproportionate assets case. The court’s order follows a detailed probe that revealed Amit Nigam amassed a wealth far beyond his legal earnings.
The Disproportionate Wealth of Amit Nigam
The case against Amit Nigam traces back to 22nd September 2022 when the CBI registered a case accusing him of illegally accumulating assets worth ₹7.52 crore between 2008 and 2018. During this period, Nigam’s total salary was reported to be ₹1.26 crore, raising significant questions about the source of the remaining ₹7 crore of assets.
As part of their investigation, the CBI found that Nigam, who was posted as Deputy Commissioner, Joint Commissioner, and Additional Commissioner across multiple regions including Delhi, Moradabad, Lucknow, and others, had used his position to acquire disproportionate wealth. His family members were also implicated, with several properties registered in their names.
14 Properties Under CBI’s Purview
The CBI has identified a total of 14 properties associated with Nigam, which include both immovable properties and investments across Uttar Pradesh and Goa. These assets are now being investigated further as the agency looks for any additional properties that may have been concealed.
The properties are valued collectively at over ₹8 crore and include real estate holdings across key cities such as Lucknow and Ghaziabad, in addition to several holdings in Goa. With the assets now officially attached, the investigation is ongoing, and the CBI is working to uncover more possible illegal properties tied to the accused.
CBI Takes Action Against Corruption
The CBI’s action against Amit Nigam marks a critical step in their ongoing fight against corruption in the public sector. The investigation is being led by CBI Ghaziabad DSP Kamal Prakash Sharma, who is working to further uncover the details of the corrupt practices allegedly employed by the officer over his decade-long career.
The CBI has confirmed that the probe remains active, and additional properties may still be uncovered as the investigation progresses. The case highlights growing efforts by the agency to clamp down on public officials misusing their positions for personal gain.
