Ahmedabad: The Gujarat Arthashastra question row has taken a serious turn after the court strongly criticised the Public Service Commission’s affidavit. The court said the response “doesn’t answer our question” and termed it “nothing but contempt.”

The issue started when a candidate challenged an answer in a recruitment exam, missing qualification by just one mark.

The case now raises important concerns about transparency, authenticity of exam sources, and accountability of public institutions.

What Is the Gujarat Arthashastra Question Row

The controversy began with a recruitment exam conducted by the Gujarat Public Service Commission (GPSC).

  • A candidate missed passing the exam by just 1 mark.
  • The candidate challenged the official answer key, claiming it was incorrect.
  • The disputed question was based on Kautilya’s Arthashastra.
  • The court asked GPSC to justify the correctness of its answer using proper sources.

This triggered judicial scrutiny over how exam questions are prepared and verified.

Court’s Strong Reaction to PSC Affidavit

During the hearing, the Gujarat High Court expressed serious dissatisfaction with the affidavit filed by GPSC officials.

  • The court said the affidavit failed to respond to specific questions asked earlier.
  • It remarked: “My order was very specific… this is nothing but contempt.”
  • The judges indicated possible contempt proceedings against top officials, including the Chairman and Secretary.

The court made it clear that vague or incomplete replies will not be accepted.

Key Issue: Authenticity of Sources

One of the main concerns in the case is the authenticity of study material used in exams.

  • GPSC reportedly relied on a PDF version of Arthashastra instead of an original verified source.
  • The court questioned:
    • How was the PDF authenticated?
    • Is there any official policy for verifying such sources?

This raises a larger issue about quality control in government exams.

What is the Importance of Gujarat Arthashastra Question Row

This case is important for lakhs of aspirants across India.

1. Fairness in Competitive Exams

Even a 1-mark error can change a candidate’s career. Courts are ensuring fairness.

2. Accountability of Public Bodies

The strong remarks show that institutions like GPSC must follow strict standards and transparency.

3. Importance of Verified Sources

The case highlights the need for authentic and reliable references while preparing exam questions.

What Happens Next?

  • The High Court may consider contempt action if proper replies are not filed.
  • GPSC has been asked to submit a clear and specific affidavit.
  • The final outcome could impact future exam processes and policies.
