However, the precise responsibilities and assignments of the two officers will depend on the applicable promotion and posting orders.

The Chief Commissioner and Director General grades are among the senior leadership levels in the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs.
CBIC functions under the Department of Revenue in the Union Ministry of Finance and is responsible for administering central indirect taxes, including the Goods and Services Tax (GST), central excise duties and customs duties.
Chief Commissioners generally supervise field formations and oversee tax administration, compliance, revenue collection and enforcement activities within their respective jurisdictions.
Directors General head specialised directorates dealing with areas such as intelligence, investigation, audit, systems, taxpayer services and other administrative functions, depending on their assignments.
Officers serving at these levels play an important role in implementing indirect tax policies, strengthening compliance mechanisms and supervising revenue administration.
