In a significant development, the Government of India has abruptly terminated the tenure of Dr. Krishnamurthy Subramanian as Executive Director (India) at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) with immediate effect.
The decision was conveyed through an order issued by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) dated April 30, 2025. The order did not specify any reason for the sudden termination of Dr. Subramanian’s appointment.
Dr. Subramanian had assumed office as India’s representative at the IMF on November 1, 2022, following his nomination to the post in August 2022. His removal comes just days ahead of a crucial IMF Executive Board meeting scheduled for May 9, 2025, during which financial assistance to Pakistan is set to be reviewed. India is reportedly expected to oppose any fresh funding for Pakistan over concerns related to terror financing.
Before his appointment at the IMF, Dr. Subramanian served as Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India from 2018 to 2021. The IMF Executive Board, comprising 24 members, plays a key role in the organisation’s daily operations and major policy decisions.
