The special investigation team (SIT) in Chandigarh is intensifying its probe into the death of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, but procedural hurdles are slowing progress. Key documents from Haryana’s Rohtak police, including FIR No. 0319/2025, daily diary reports, and arrest proceedings, are central to understanding the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death on October 7.
Temporary Access Granted, Formal Records Pending
While the SIT has been permitted temporary inspection of the records, formal certification and sharing require approval from higher authorities in Rohtak. Rohtak IG has emphasized that these documents are part of an ongoing investigation and cannot be officially released without proper authorization. Senior Chandigarh police officials confirmed the SIT is still awaiting certified copies to proceed with evidence-backed interrogation of key individuals.
Family Alleges FIR Triggered Officer’s Death
The late officer’s family has raised serious concerns, claiming that the Rohtak FIR, filed a day before his death, may have been fabricated and acted as a trigger for his extreme step. The SIT is examining whether the FIR was registered following proper procedure or if external pressures influenced the process.
Investigation Progress Hampered by Missing Records
A month has passed since the officer’s death, yet substantive progress remains limited. So far, the SIT has only examined police personnel, advocates, and other witnesses to reconstruct the events leading up to the incident. Officials emphasize that without certified case records, the SIT cannot formally summon or confront key figures, including liquor contractor Mr. Praveen Bansal and former SP of Rohtak Mr. Narender Bijarniya. These documents are critical for verifying timelines, identifying procedural lapses, and ensuring a thorough, evidence-based investigation.
IPS Officer’s Wife Seeks Expedited Inquiry
Ms. Amneet, IAS officer and wife of the late IPS officer, met the SIT in Chandigarh to request an update on the ongoing probe. She urged officials to expedite the investigation and secure all relevant records to ensure a fair and comprehensive inquiry into her husband’s death.
