Who Is Diplomat Charanjeet Singh? IFS Officer Named India’s Next Ambassador to UN Conference on Disarmament

New Delhi: The Government of India on Tuesday appointed Charanjeet Singh (IFS: 1996) as the next Ambassador and Permanent Representative of India to the UN Conference on Disarmament in Geneva. He is currently serving as Additional Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and is expected to take up his new assignment shortly, according to an official statement by the MEA.

Statement from Ministry of External Affairs

The Ministry of External Affairs said, “ Charanjeet Singh (IFS: 1996), presently Additional Secretary in the Ministry, has been appointed as the next Ambassador/PR of India to the UN Conference on Disarmament, Geneva. He is expected to take up the assignment shortly.”

Charanjeet Singh brings over two decades of experience in foreign service and has held several key positions both in India and abroad:

  • Additional Secretary, MEA (Nov 2023 – Present)
  • Joint Secretary, MEA (Apr 2022 – Nov 2023)
  • Deputy High Commissioner, High Commission of India, London (Sep 2018 – Nov 2021)
  • Consul General, Indian Consulate, Milan (Jan 2016 – Sep 2018)
  • Director & Joint Secretary, MEA, New Delhi (2009 – 2016)
  • Consul General, Indian Consulate, Vladivostok, Russia (2004 – 2007)

His career highlights include leading Indian diplomatic missions in Europe and Russia, managing bilateral relations, and representing India in multilateral forums.

Educational Background

  • M.Sc. in Physics from Government College, Ajmer (1990–1992), graduating First in class
  • Schooling at D.A.V. Sr. Secondary School, Kesar Ganj, Ajmer

Looking Ahead

With his appointment, Charanjeet Singh will represent India at the UN Conference on Disarmament, a key multilateral forum focused on global arms control, disarmament treaties, and international security negotiations.
