Raipur: In a historic decision, the Government of Chhattisgarh, with the consent of the Central Government, has extended the tenure of Amitabh Jain, a 1989-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, as the Chief Secretary (CS) of Chhattisgarh. Jain, who was due for superannuation on June 30, 2025, will now continue in the top bureaucratic post till September 30, 2025.
This marks the first-ever extension of service granted to a Chief Secretary in Chhattisgarh since the state’s formation in 2000. The unexpected move, finalized during the state cabinet meeting on Monday, surprised many who were expecting a new appointment.
Surprise Extension Amid Speculations
Ahead of the cabinet meeting, there was intense speculation regarding Jain’s successor. Three senior IAS officers were seen as frontrunners — Subrat Sahu (1992 batch), Amit Agarwal (1993 batch), currently on central deputation, and Manoj Pingua (1994 batch). However, with the last-minute green signal from the Centre, Jain’s extension caught the state bureaucracy off guard.
The cabinet meeting, which was initially expected to bid farewell to Jain, instead resulted in a historic decision that reaffirms his importance to the ongoing governance in Chhattisgarh.
